Kidney Stones and Migraines

Hello Everyone!

I know, I have been MIA for a while.  So I figured I better come and do a quick update.

I posted about a month ago about how I had a random first time seizure and I had to get a MRI.  Well, we finally got the MRI done, the Neurologist said that they needed to talk to me ASAP about some scarring I had on my brain.  We made our appointment for the 4th of September.  I went in and he said that I had scarring that is usually seen in people that are heavy smokers, people who suffer from migraines or sometimes in people with seizures.

Well, since I have never touched a cigarette a day in my life, I only had the one seizure (and they still aren't 100% that it was a seizure), and I was getting headaches before all of this happened, they are saying the scarring is from migraines.  How scary is it that having migraines can scar your brain!!

They put my on medication that I have to take daily for migraines.  I have only taken it maybe 3 times so we will see how it goes.  I have to go back to the Neurologist in a month for a checkup and then I have to get yearly MRIs to make sure that the scarring is not getting worse.

Okay so part number 2:

Yesterday morning, I woke up at about 1:30 a.m.  I hadn't even gone to bed until 1 a.m!  But I woke up in horrible pain, it felt like someone had been stabbing my stomach and then it started to spread across the whole right side of my stomach, to my side and then to my back.  I didn't want to wake my husband up because I thought that it might just be a cyst that was rupturing and I was hoping I could just tough it out for an hour and go back to bed.

After taking 3 baths to try to stop the pain and waiting over 3 hours, I finally woke up my Husband.  He got dressed, helped me get dressed and off to the hospital we went.  It was ridiculous I was in so much pain, I couldn't stand up alone, I couldn't even lift up my legs.  I got to the ER and they took me right back, it turns out that going to the ER at 4:30 is a good time to go, its really empty!!

The Dr. decided to start pumping me full of meds, they actually said they were giving me the strongest narcotic that they have.  I went into the cat-scan and in the middle of it ALL the pain came rushing back, when I got back to the room  I was in tears!  They gave me more meds and after that I was getting more meds every 30 minutes along with nausea meds, heartburn, and anti-inflammatory meds.

After seeing my cat-scan they said that I had 4 kidney stones, one was trying to pass but it was 4 mm so it was having a hard time getting out.  They also said that there was another one that was 6 mm's and two more that were 4-5mm.  The ER Dr. and the urologist decided to admit me to the hospital and to put me into surgery that day.

So I had surgery yesterday at 1p.m.  They blasted them with a laser so it broke them up into smaller pieces and then they put a lovely stint in so that they can pass without scarring anything.

I swear when it rains it pours.  I have never had any health problems and now within a month I have had 2 cat-scans, and 1 MRI.

Im just thankful that after all of this, I am feeling good.  It could be so much worse.  I have missed all of you and didn't want you to think I ran away :)

Have you ever had any kidney stones or do you deal with migraines?

XOXO Tiffany

    1. I am so sorry that you deal with migraines, they are horrible. The medicine that they put me on has helped out a lot. I actually have quit drinking soda and have started just drinking water! I don't think that will last long though, I need my caffeine to keep up with my kids!!

  2. Wow Tiffany! I've had a kidney stone myself and it was the worst pain I've ever felt! I too woke up in the middle of the night, and found that the only comfortable position was face down on the tile floor in the foyer! My husband was totally freaked when he woke up! Hope you're feeling better after surgery! Thank goodness they didn't do more damage!

    1. Ugh, I feel so sorry for you! It honestly is the worst pain I have ever felt. I have always heard that Kidney Stones were painful, but NEVER did I imagine that they could be this painful. Have you got any new kidney stones since that happened to you? Thats my worst fear, I don't think I could go through all of this again!!

  3. I have been a long time migraine sufferer. I even had a 3 week cluster migraine last year that was just awful. I am prescribed Relpax (highest dose) and have been on that for years, it is a miracle drug. I had no idea it could cause scarring in the brain.

How is it that you know which Birchbox you are going to receive??

    1. I am so sorry that you suffer from migraines. They put me on 120mg Verapamil for mine, this is just a starter does to see how my body handles it, so far its doing ok but I have only taken it a few times. It does make me really dizzy though.
I had no idea that migraines caused scarring of the brain too, pretty scary stuff.

You can usually find out on the 10th of the month which box you are getting. Sign into your Birchbox account, go to the "box" tab that is in the upper left hand. That should show you what contents are inside your box, if you go down below that to "box history" and click on the box that you are waiting to receive. If you look at the url address it will say which box number is yours. ex:https://www.birchbox.com/shop/birchbox-1/september-2012/september12box21
      I am getting box 21.

      Hopefully that helps!

  4. I have a stone in one of my kidneys, but last time I checked and that was six years ago, it was just small and it was in the muscle part of the kidney. I was to just manage it. I'm hoping it hasn't gone bigger.

    1. Kidney stones are just crazy! My sister has had one for a few years and it doesn't cause her any problems, I guess it was just because mine was trying to pass and they said that it was blocking everything that was trying to come out behind it. I feel a billion times better with those suckers out but dang this stint is not fun! I hope that your never causes you any problems.

    1. Isn't it crazy that migraines scar your brain, I never knew that until the Neurologist told me about it after he saw my MRI. My SIL fell and hit her head and actually has had brain damage from it, but my brain looks worse than hers. Pretty scary stuff!! I love your blog, thanks so much for stoping by mine!! You have made me feel so much better to know that there is someone else who has gone through what I went through!

  8. Im so sorry about your husband, that would be incredibly scary.

Kidney stones are horrible, I had always heard people talk about them but I never realized how bad they are!! The meds they give at the hospital were good but I was still in pain even with the medicine! So glad that they got those mean little suckers out!

I hope that you and your husband are both doing okay.
